Volunteering with Cults Library Trust is flexible and designed to fit around your life. Every contribution, big or small, is valued – whether you can give a few hours a week, help occasionally, or take on a more regular commitment. The suggested hours for each role are just a guide and can be adapted wherever possible to suit you.

IT & Digital Officer

Role Overview:

  • Helps maintain library computers and digital systems to ensure they run smoothly.
  • Advises trustees, staff, and volunteers on digital tools, technology use, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Supports setup and use of IT equipment for programs, events, and community activities.
  • Provides guidance on online safety and good digital practices for users and volunteers.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; approx. 4–6 hours per month.

Experience Required:

  • IT knowledge required; training if needed provided.

Safeguarding / PVG Requirements:

  • Not required.

Additional Notes:

  • Suitable for anyone with an interest in IT or helping others use technology effectively.

Funding & Grants Volunteer

Role Overview:

  • Assists with researching suitable grants, funds, and charitable opportunities.
  • Supports the preparation of funding applications (gathering information, drafting sections, proofreading, etc.).
  • Helps with community fundraising activities such as events, appeals, or local sponsorship.
  • Keeps simple records of funding applications, deadlines, and outcomes.
  • Works alongside trustees and the Development Officer to match funding to project needs.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; approx. 2–4 hours per month.

Experience Required:

  • No prior experience required; interest in fundraising or grant applications helpful.

Safeguarding / PVG Requirements:

  • Not required.

Additional Notes:

  • Excellent for anyone who enjoys research, writing, or supporting the library’s sustainability.

Youth Volunteer (Under 18)

Role Overview:

  • Supports adult volunteers in library tasks without being solely responsible for areas of operational risk.
  • Assists in education or learning programs, community events, and general library duties.
  • Receives guidance and supervision from trustees or experienced volunteers.
  • Helps with set-up, tidy-up, and event preparation as appropriate.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; typically 1–2 hours per week.

Experience Required:

  • No prior experience required; supervision provided.

Safeguarding / PVG Requirements:

  • Not required (supervised role).

Additional Notes:

  • Youth volunteers must be 16 – 18 years or older. Individuals under 16 may be able to volunteer, but suitability will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and adult supervision (over 18) will be required to ensure compliance with our safeguarding policies.
  • Great opportunity to gain skills and experience in a library/community environment.

Gardening & Outdoor Space Volunteer

Role Overview:

  • Helps with planting, garden care, and seasonal maintenance.
  • Supports setup and upkeep of outdoor community areas, including seating and recreational spaces.
  • Assists with safe and tidy use of outdoor areas during events or library activities.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; approx. 2–4 hours per month.

Experience Required:

  • No prior experience necessary; enthusiasm for gardening helpful.

Safeguarding / PVG Requirements:

  • Not required.

Community Events Volunteer

Role Overview:

  • Helps prepare and run events in coordination with trustees and other volunteers.
  • Supports setup, visitor engagement, and pack-down of events.
  • Assists with communications, invitations, and community outreach for events.
  • Provides feedback on events and contributes to ongoing improvement.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; varies depending on event schedule.

Library Services Volunteer

Role Overview:

  • Manages reception desk and assists with enquiries.
  • Shelves, organises, and maintains book collections and displays.
  • Helps with circulation, returns, and library system operations.
  • Assists with community engagement activities, workshops, and events as needed.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible, typically 2–4 hours per week.

Experience Required:

  • No prior experience necessary; training provided.

  • Not required.

Building & Facilities Steward

Role Overview:

  • Unlocks and locks the building, controls key or access codes.
  • Monitors external lets and events, including spot checks or scheduled supervision.
  • Completes end-of-day building checks: security systems, arming alarms, cleanliness, and any maintenance issues.
  • Reports issues, damage, or concerns to the board or Governance & Compliance Officer.
  • Acts as a point of contact for facility-related matters during community or external use.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; typically 2–3 hours per week.

Experience Required:

  • No prior experience necessary; training provided.

Safeguarding / PVG Requirements:

  • Not required.

Learning & Education Volunteer

Role Overview:

  • Assists with running reading groups, book clubs, and educational activities such as Book Bugs or bespoke Trust programs.
  • Supports preparation and delivery of learning resources.
  • Encourages engagement, participation, and literacy development in group settings.
  • Reports outcomes and feedback to the Education Portfolio trustee.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; typically 1–3 hours per week.

Experience Required:

  • No prior experience necessary; enthusiasm for working with children or groups helpful.

Safeguarding / PVG Requirements:

  • PVG required for roles involving children or vulnerable adults.

Volunteer Librarian

Role Overview:

  • Advises on book arrangement, classification, and inventory management.
  • Supports Library Service Volunteers and Learning Volunteers in handling collections.
  • Assists with implementing library policies and best practices for collections and service delivery.
  • Contributes to training of new volunteers in library systems and operations.
