The library board plays a pivotal role in the governance and strategic oversight of the library project, ensuring that it fulfils its mission to serve the community effectively and run in a proper and sustainable manner. One of the primary responsibilities of the board at this stage, is to oversee the reopening and redevelopment of the library. The board also oversees financial management, including budget approvals and fundraising efforts, to ensure the library operates sustainably. Additionally, they monitor compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards, safeguarding the library’s integrity and ensuring it meets its obligations as a community body. Beyond governance, the board acts as a bridge between the library and the wider community. Board members advocate for the library, helping to foster partnerships with local businesses, government bodies, and community organisations to enhance library services and secure resources. They also play a crucial role in representing the needs and concerns of the community, ensuring that the library’s programs and services are inclusive and accessible to all. By working closely with partners and engaging with stakeholders, the board helps shape the library’s strategic direction, ensuring it remains a vibrant and relevant resource that contributes to the educational, cultural, and social well-being of the community.
To ensure the board remains committed to serving the local community, all members are registered residents to the local area and have all previously held positions in community groups and organisations across Aberdeen. While there is collective responsibility for the governance of the project, some board members have a portfolio area and focus on.
