1. What is Cults Library Trust?
Cults Library Trust is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) formed with the aim of reopening and operating the Cults Library as a community library and hub. Our goal is to create a sustainable, vibrant space for residents of Cults and the surrounding Lower Deeside area. The Trust was established by a group of local volunteers and supporters who are committed to reviving the library and ensuring that it continues to serve the needs of the community for many years to come.
2. Why was the library closed in the first place?
The library was closed by Aberdeen City Council as part of a wider round of budget cuts aimed at reducing public services. This decision was met with significant community opposition, as the library had long been a valuable resource for local residents, particularly for children, students, and the elderly.
3. How is Cults Library Trust working to reopen the library?
We are working through the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015, which allows communities to take ownership of public assets. In this case, we have submitted an application for Community Asset Transfer (CAT) to take ownership of the former library building from Aberdeen City Council. Our team is also focused on fundraising, securing grants, and building partnerships to ensure the long-term success of the library.
4. What is the “Community Asset Transfer” process?
The Community Asset Transfer (CAT) process enables communities to apply for the transfer of ownership of public buildings or land to manage and use for the benefit of the local community. As part of this process, the Trust has submitted an application to take ownership of the former Cults Library building and associated facilities, with plans to restore it as a community resource.
